Başakşehir is the center of the new Istanbul and home to ongoing government development projects. The Turkish government chose Başakşehir to be one of the city centers due to its location within the seismically safe green line. One of the most significant projects in Başakşehir is the Başakşehir Medical City, the largest medical city in Turkey and Europe. The Istanbul Water Canal also passes through Başakşehir, dividing it into two halves. Other notable features include Başakşehir Square, the largest in Turkey, the largest botanical garden in Europe, and the green spaces of Başakşehir Valley.
